Opening Ceremony with Duty of Care and Podium discussion: “Strengths and Limits of Environmental Litigation”

We are delighted to be opening this year’s festival with the film “Duty of care – The Climate Trials”. The film will be followed by a podium discussion on the role the justice system can play in achieving environmental and climate justice. Three panelists, who will join online, will bring their perspective on this issue:
– Franziska Valdés Cifuentes, jurist and PhD student at the University of Marburg on the topic of the scope, boundaries and validity of the international 1,5-degree-target in German constitutional law.
– Noah Walker-Crawford: a research fellow at the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics. He is a publicly engaged researcher on climate change and climate processes. He advises plaintiffs and non-governmental organisations organisations on the use of legal means in the fight for climate justice. In particular, he is involved in the case of Luciano Lliuya v. RWE.
– Sarah Tak, producer of the film Duty of Care and coordinator of the Klimaatzaak (Belgium).
Wir freuen uns das diesjährige Festival mit dem Film “Duty of care – The Climate Trials” eröffnen zu können. Im Anschluss an den Film wird eine Podiumsdiskussion stattfinden zu der Frage, welche Rolle das Rechtssystem beim Kampf für Umwelt- und Klimagerechtigkeit spielen kann. Drei Panelist*innen werden ihre Perspektive zu diesem Thema online einbringen:
– Franziska Valdés Cifuentes, Juristin und Doktorandin an der Universität Marburg zum Thema Umfang, Grenzen und Bindungswirkung des völkerrechtlichen 1,5-Grad-Ziels im deutschen Verfassungsrecht.
– Noah Walker-Crawford: wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Grantham Research Institute der London School of Economics. Er ist ein öffentlich engagierter Forscher zum Thema Klimaklagen. Er berät Prozessparteien und NGOs beim Einsatz rechtlicher Instrumente im Kampf für Klimagerechtigkeit.
– Sarah Tak Sarah: cum laude Master-Abschluss in Rechtswissenschaften der Katholischen Universität Leuven und Koordinatorin der gemeinnützigen Organisation Klimaatzaak. Mit über 58.000 Bürgerkläger*innen ist Klimaatzaak der größte Rechtsstreit in der belgischen Geschichte und bis heute einer der weltweit führenden Klimafälle. Sarah ist außerdem Vorstandsmitglied der flämischen Umweltkoalition Bond Beter Leefmilieu und Produzentin von Nic Balthazars Dokumentarfilm Duty of Care über Klimagerechtigkeit.
