Between 1904 and 1908, Germany carried out a genocide against the Nama and OvaHerero peoples in response to their resistance against colonial rule. It wasn’t until 2015 that the German government formally recognized these atrocities as genocide, and only in 2021 was a financial reparations agreement reached. However, the struggle for restorative justice continues, as many activists view the reparations as inadequate—pointing out that the process was conducted solely between governments, excluding the descendants of the victims. Join us for a lecture and discussion with Jephta Nguherimo, an activist, writer and founder of the OvaHerero People’s Memorial and Reconstruction Foundation. In the last three decades, he has been a driving force in the struggle seeking reparations for the OvaHerero and Nama genocides. He has spoken and written on the topics of the memory of the genocide and struggles for restorative justice. Organized by: FRID - Freiburg Initiative for Decoloniality
