In this lecture series we try to understand why we as humans have gone to such lengths to make art the way we did, the way we do now, and what it might look like in the future. Why bother painting in the unreachable depths and darkness of caves? Why erect enormous pyramids and cathedrals? Why representation? Why abstraction? And why hang bananas on walls? And what does all this tell us about the cultures in which these works were made? The series ends with a bold speculation about how and why we might be on the verge of creating new forms of art in the 21st century, drawing heavily on the advanced technologies that define our time.
After each lecture we head to a bar or a restaurant to carry on the discussion, have a natter, get to know newcomers, and enjoy a cosy, relaxed time with fellow art enthusiasts.
The lectures are aimed at anyone, with or without previous knowledge of art history. The sessions build on one another, so regular attendance helps, but it isn't required, since each session opens with a short recap of what came before. Depending on interest, we may also organise museum trips to see some of the works in person, for example to the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg or the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart.
Lectures are free of charge and no registration is needed and will be held in English.

This lecture series is a part of events organized by ARTCORE | International Art Community of Freiburg, a newly founded, self-organised group of art enthusiasts from all around the world.
