In recent months, Egypt has witnessed an unprecedented crackdown on refugees and migrants, particularly Sudanese and Syrians. Mass arrests, arbitrary detention, forced deportations, and the targeting of refugee communities even those registered with the UN refugee agency have become increasingly widespread. Police raids on homes, the detention of women and children, and reports of people disappearing after being stopped in the streets or on public transport have created an atmosphere of fear across refugee communities. This unprecedented campaign follows increasing EU funding to Egypt to control migration and support return programs of refugees.
The podium will consist of experts from the 'Refugees Platform in Egypt', the Sudanese and Syrian communities, as well as diaspora groups namely; Egypt Solidarity Movement, Sudan Uprising and Egyptian Diaspora Resists.
